Secular Franciscans are lay people who live the Christian life by not just obeying the Ten Commandments, but living out the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, being poor of spirit, meek of heart and instruments of peace. Followers of St. Francis and St. Clare and witnesses of the Gospel.

The worldwide Secular Franciscan Order is approved by the Church. It has a Rule of life and is not simply a pious society or association. As a lay order, we are not called to leave the world, but to transform it. Our Order has fraternities at the Local, Regional, National and International levels with duly elected councils. The Franciscan Spirit of poverty, simplicity, service and joy runs through the whole Franciscan family; (that is, the First Order, priests and brothers; Second Order, the Poor Clares, cloistered nuns; Third Order Regular, brothers and sisters; and the Seculars; who used to be called the Third Order). This spirit is called the Franciscan Charism.
